The geometry of the valley
Srinagar sits in the middle. Gulmarg is 50 km west, Pahalgam 95 km south-east, Sonamarg 80 km north-east. The instinct is to do all three. The problem is that each return drive takes most of a day, and done badly you end up seeing Kashmir through a windscreen.
A five-day shape that works
- Day 1 — Arrive Srinagar. No driving. Shikara at sunset, dinner on the houseboat, sleep early.
- Day 2 — Srinagar properly: Mughal gardens, the old city, a walnut-carving workshop, floating market at dawn if you can face the 5:30 start.
- Day 3 — Gulmarg as a day trip. Leave by 7:30 to beat the buses, gondola to Phase 2, back by early evening.
- Day 4 — Pahalgam, staying the night. Betaab and Aru valleys, the Lidder, pony ride at Baisaran if you want it.
- Day 5 — Return slowly via Awantipora, or push on to Sonamarg and come back late.
What to cut if you only have four days
Drop Sonamarg. It is beautiful and the Thajiwas glacier walk is genuinely good, but it is the longest drive of the three and the one most easily swapped for another afternoon on the lake. Keep Gulmarg for the gondola and Pahalgam for the night stay — Pahalgam in the evening, once the day-trip buses have left, is a different and much better place.
Where to sleep
One or two nights on a Dal Lake houseboat is the thing people remember. Beyond that we usually put guests in a Srinagar hotel for the working part of the trip and on the water for the last night — houseboats are magical and also slightly damp, and a week of them is too much for most people.
The one thing we insist on
Do not schedule a departure flight on day five if day five involves Sonamarg. That road closes without warning for weather and repairs, and we have driven guests to the airport at speed more times than we would like. Build the buffer in.
