Kashmir Great Lakes Trek: Fitness, Gear & Packing List

Seven days, seven alpine lakes and four passes above 4,000 m. What to train, what to carry, and what to leave behind.

The Kashmir Great Lakes trek is the finest seven days of walking in India, and it is not a beginner's stroll. Here is what the route actually demands and how to prepare for it.

The route in numbers

  • Duration: 7 trekking days plus arrival and exit days
  • Distance: about 65 km
  • Highest point: Gadsar Pass, 4,200 m
  • Camps: Nichnai (3,505 m), Vishansar (3,690 m), Gadsar (3,600 m), Satsar (3,590 m), Gangbal (3,505 m)
  • Walking load: 5–7 hours a day, with one 12 km day

You carry a day pack; mules carry common luggage.

Fitness, eight weeks out

You need sustained capacity, not speed. Start eight weeks before departure:

  1. Three 5 km runs a week, building to 8 km by week six.
  2. Stairs or incline twice a week, 40–60 minutes in a weighted pack of 7–8 kg.
  3. One long walk a week, 4 to 6 hours with the pack, on trails or hills if you can.
  4. Leg strength twice a week: squats, lunges, step-ups, calf raises.
  5. A full-day hike two weeks out, in the boots you will wear.

If you can walk 6 hours on consecutive days with a 8 kg pack at home, the trek will feel hard but enjoyable. If you cannot do it at sea level, altitude will flatten you.
